Blueberry Breeding Program

Blueberry is grown in climatic areas with marked winters. The evergreen varieties do not meet the requirements of the quality demanded by consumers. In addition,  low chilling requirement varieties have been developed  through genetic improvement but have not been evaluated in areas without winter cold.

This sub-project aims to assess blueberry varieties of low chilling requirement available in the market and develop new varieties with better adaptation to areas with low or no winter cold, such as those in northern Chile or the coast of Peru. This will supply the market in periods when it is undersupplied.
